Ecataic realizations of young American Hare Krishna book distributors in 1987.

The 1980s was a turbulent decade for the Hare Krishna Movement in America. There was a lot of bad publicity, some caused by overly enthusiastic book distribution techniques in the airports and some caused by a a court case brought by the students of ISKCON's schools.

So the book distribution suffered. In 1987 a group of young Hare Krishna devotees decided to start distributing Prabhupada's books to the general public again. Their experience is very uplifting and ecstatic and they share some of that with us in this video.

Book distributors who share their realizations include: Ananta, Rama Raya, Caitanya Nitai and Bhakta Mickey.

In the early days in Ukraine devotees would just set up a table and display Srila Prabhupada's books and people would line up. And sometimes it got a little unruly and the devotees had to try to get everybody orderly, to get them to stand in line and wait for the people who were in front to see the books and purchase their books. Sometimes hundreds of books would be sold that way. Just a table in a subway station.

Swami Bhaktipada is in the eye of the storm in a case involving murder, kidnapping and mail fraud. The son of a Baptist minister, Bhaktipada, founded a Hare Krishna community in the hills of West Virginia 21 years ago. In a swarm of controversy the swami was kicked out of the Krishna movement three years ago. Bhaktipada, previously known as Keith Ham, has been named in five counts of racketeering charged including conspiricy to commit murder against Steven Bryant who waged a one-man campaign against him. Swami Bhaktipada also has a book out called "How to Say No to Drugs."

In 1971, under the pretext of meeting with Professor Kotovisk, an Indologist from Moscow’s U.S.S.R. Academy of Sciences, Srila Prabhupada accompanied by two of his disciples, Syamasundara and Aravinda, embarked into a dangerous mission to somehow introduce Krishna Consciousness into the Soviet Union.

This film, produced to commemorate the thirtieth anniversary of Srila Prabhupada's visit to Moscow in 2001, includes an interview with Professor Kotovisk where he tells his side of the story, it also shows how Krishna consciousness had attracted many contemporary Russians at that time (2001) including famous singers, artists and DJs.

At the time, in 1971, the Soviet Union was a strictly atheistic regime. One could be executed for spreading religious books into the country. In fact, the visit of Srila Prabhupada into the USSR almost had a tragic start when Syamasundara was caught with a Bhagavad-Gita at the border. Fortunately, the customs official was distracted and let them enter with the book.

Their visit would last just five days, and all their movements would be closely followed by the KGB. In fact, apart from a few short walks, in which he was followed by KGB agents, Prabhupada spent most of his time in their hotel room in the Hotel National.

On the fourth day, however, something unexpected happened. While walking on the streets of Moscow, looking for fruits for Prabhupada, Syamasundara met an interested boy, who went with him back to the hotel to meet Srila Prabhupada. For a few hours, Srila Prabhupada explained to him all the basics of Krsna Consciousness and gave him the Bhagavad that they had smuggled into the country.

Amazingly, after just this short meeting, this boy became seriously committed to spreading Krsna Consciousness, later becoming Ananta Shanti Das, who paid an extremely high personal price to be able to spread Krsna Consciousness in the Soviet Union. In this short visit, Srila Prabhupada was able to successfully plant the seed of his movement in this hostile territory.

The ISCKON Foundation was launched by the GBC in 1992 when they saw the Western devotees were loosing interest. So it was an attempt by the GBC to convert Srila Prabhupada's ISKCON, which is supposed to be spreading Krishna consciousness all over the world to the general population, into a sectarian Indian church. This video shows the beginning of the process which by now has basically succeeded in turning ISKCON into a sectarian church where only ethnic Indian Hindus are welcome.

This film was produced by the late Russian Krsnadas who drowned in the Ganges at Mayapur at a very young age, not very long after he made this film in 2007. His disappearance was a great loss to us and a great gain for the spirit souls at his next destination.
